What do I need to start streaming from my race car with racestreaming.com?
You will need the following to get started with the racestreaming.com platform.
- RaceStreaming.com StreamKit
- A camera, such as a DJI Osmo Action, GoPro 8 + MediaMod (or newer), or any other camera with a USB or HDMI output. You can also connect to Racelogic’s vBox or AIM’s SmartyCam 3 platform as the camera input.
What is included in the data plan?
RaceStreaming.com sends data over the Internet using the built-in 4G/LTE modem. We provide the StreamKit, including a mobile data plan, with 24 hours of live streaming per month. Should you need more, we are able to offer higher tiers as well. Our data plan is valid in all of EEA (EU+UK), the USA, and Canada. If you plan to use our platform outside of these areas, you can swap the SIM card to use any local provider. Please contact us, if you are looking for an offer excluding a data plan.
What is needed at the race track?
RaceStreaming.com transmits data to the Internet using the built-in 4G/LTE modem. Good cellular coverage is essential for optimal upstream data performance. Our modem will always use the best possible network available in the area.
From the Pitbox or any other location, you can receive the live stream over the Internet using your Mobile, Tablet, or Desktop device. We recommend you set up monitors to allow your pit crew or your guests to follow the live stream.
Can I connect multiple viewers at the same time?
Yes – you can simultaneously connect multiple viewers at the same time or connect your live stream directly to YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Live, or other RTMP or SRT streaming services and allow unlimited viewers.
Do I need a camera?
Yes – You may already have a built-in vBox or AIM camera system that provides video output. If not, there are many different action cameras available today. You may already be the lucky owner of a camera that can provide video and audio via USB or HDMI. Plug your existing action camera into the RaceStreaming.com hardware using a USB and/or HDMI cable.
Can I connect multiple cameras?
Yes. You can connect one or two cameras to the RaceStreaming StreamKit at once. One camera via the HDMI input port and/or two cameras via the two USB ports. When two cameras are connected, the StreamKit will automatically enable PiP-mode (Picture-in-picture). Using two cameras, you will be able to stream both a forward- and rear-facing camera or a forward- and driver-facing camera.
If you need more cameras, you can simply purchase multiple StreamKits.
Which camera is the best?
If not using vBox or AIM, we have tested various action cameras available. Currently, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, will automatically switch into webcam-mode, and provides excellent video quality for the price. Furthermore, you can easily add ND-filters (sunglasses), which will enhance the visual appearance of the live video stream.
Do I need a SIM card?
The RaceStreaming.com StreamKit is provided, including SIM card and an active data plan for use in all of EEA (EU + UK), the USA, and Canada. If you plan to use RaceStreaming within this geographical area you do not need any SIM card.
Antennas and streaming quality?
The RaceStreaming.com StreamKit transfers data via the 4G/LTE network. You can mount the included external 4G/LTE antenna on your car to improve the 4G/LTE connectivity. Included within the RaceStreaming StreamKit is also a GPS antenna used for providing movement data, speed (km/h or mph). Both antennas are connected via the standard SMA plugs on the RaceStreaming StreamKit.
Can I get audio from the car within the stream?
Yes – If your camera has or is connected to a microphone and provides the audio track through the HDMI or USB connection, your stream will also include onboard audio from within your race car. When using multiple cameras, only the first connected camera will provide the audio track, as the second camera is displayed via PiP mode (Picture-in-Picture).
What is the expected latency of the live stream?
Depending on your cellular coverage, the desired video quality, and the player used, you will be able to follow the live stream from any Internet-connected device with a latency from below 1 second to a maximum of 3 seconds. Connecting the RaceStreaming.com live stream to a YouTube stream will allow viewers to follow the stream with approximately a 3 to 7-second delay due to YouTube’s way of processing live streams.
Can I use the stream for professional broadcasting?
If you have a professional broadcasting setup, you can connect to the in-car streams and use them live within your production. The RaceStreaming platform provides, by default, external RTMP or SRT streams. If you have a semi-professional setup, we recommend using OBS Studio (Free software) or vMix. Under optimal configuration, broadcasters can receive the live RaceStreaming feed with minimal latency down to 500ms, depending on your technical setup. Please contact us to learn more.
Does RaceStreaming work with OBS Studio?
Yes, the live stream from RaceStreaming.com can be collected as a media source within OBS Studio for semi-professional broadcasting production. In OBS Studio, you can also overlay data from websites to show race position, place on-track ranking information, etc. Se example here
Does RaceStreaming work with vMix?
Yes, the live stream from RaceStreaming.com can be used as an SRT input source within vMix for professional broadcasting production. Learn how to configure vMix here.
What streaming quality can I expect?
RaceStreaming.com transfers 1080p. You have the option to lower or increase the quality and manually add additional latency for a better stable video connection, if needed.
Will my live video stream be recorded?
Yes – RaceStreaming offers an on-device recording feature, which allows you to store up to 48 hours of video. After the race, simply plug in a USB memory stick and all the recorded video will be automatically copied to your USB stick. We are also working on a live cloud recording feature. During the beta test period of the live cloud recording feature, it will be available for all clients at no extra cost. The live recording feature will enable you to perform instant replay and allow you to review and replay action just seconds after it has happened.
